With 4.5-week grades posting on September 2, reflect on your experience in American Literature so far. What has been going well for you, what has been challenging, and what is one thing you need to improve moving forward?

Prompt Response:       I believe I've been doing well in this class so far. I haven't found many challenges to overcome yet. One thing I think I could improve on, is my ability on analyzing poems. We've been reading different poems for the past week and I find it to be somewhat difficult to break them down. Other than that, this class has been extremely good for me. I've turned all my work in on time, created quality work, and participated in class. I hope that this continues for the rest of the year. Summary:  Today in class, we analyzed the meaning of ten different quotes by Emily Dickinson. Reflection:  I found today's classwork to be interesting, as it really tested my abilities on understand poems.

Prompt: In “Her Sweet Weight on My Heart a Night” by Emily Dickinson, the speaker describes the emotional weight another person can have on us. Think about someone who has left a lasting impact on your life. In what ways do you still carry that person with you?

Prompt Response:   Someone who has left a lasting impact of my life is my first grade teacher from elementary school. This teacher has always made me feel seen and important. When I'd have bad days she'd always cheer me up. Although I haven't spoken to her in years, she still carries a special place in my life. When I struggle with academic stress I remember her words and how someone recognizes me as more than a student. This shows how people's actions really affects others. To others, these interactions with my teacher may seem small but they've played a huge role in my life. Summary: Today in class, we continued to work on our heart drawings and read "Her Sweet Weight on My Heart a Night" by Emily Dickinson. Reflection:  I liked creating my heart drawing because it allowed me to think about my emotions and be creative. Additionally, I liked the poem we read today, but I thought it was a little hard to understand at some parts.

Prompt: In “Heart, We Will Forget Him!” by Emily Dickinson, the speaker shows a conflict between what we think and what we feel. Describe a time when your heart and your mind seemed to want two different things. Which one did you listen to, and why?

Prompt Response:       A time when my heart and mind seemed to want two different things is when I had to decide to forgive a particular person. There's is this person that has been rude to me countless of times, which hurts me. In my mind, I know I have to cut this person off because they've given me the reasons to. Meanwhile, in my heart I feel that I should give them another chance because I'd feel bad for cutting them off. I decided to listen to my mind, as it was the most logical choice for the future. If I continued to be this person's friend then it would just bring me more pain and stress later. Even though I felt bad for this person, I knew I had to save myself for the future. Summary: Today in class, we read "Heart, We Will Forget Him!" by Emily Dickinson and analyzed the text.  Reflection:  I believe this has been my favorite poem by Emily Dickinson so far. I really liked how she separated the mind and heart through words.

Prompt: In Emily Dickinson’s “I Felt a Funeral, in My Brain,” the speaker experiences a mind that seems to work against her. Sometimes our own thoughts can make a situation feel worse than it actually is. Describe a time when overthinking, worrying, or doubting yourself affected the way you handled a situation. What did you learn from the experience?

Prompt Response:     I'm a huge over thinker so I often feel this way. A time that I can remember that felt like my mind was working against me, was when I had to catch up on work I missed from being absent. During this time, I had been absent for an entire week. There was so many assignments to be made up, so I felt extremely overwhelmed. I don't like to turn in work late or to be behind, so it felt like I had mountains of work to do, when in reality it wasn't that much. This feeling of being overwhelmed pushed me do all-nighters to complete my assignments, which led to me going to school without getting any sleep. I constantly felt like I was going to lose my mind due to the stress. From this experience, I learned that I have to realize that none of this is permanent. These feelings I have when I'm stressed or overwhelmed are temporary.      Summary: Today in class, we read "I Felt a Funeral, in My Brain" by Emily Dickinson and answered comprehension qu...

Describe one thing that makes you different from other people.

Prompt Response:   One thing that makes me different from other people is that I have an extremely strong moral compass. Everyone has morals, but I believe I follow mine more than others. Sometimes this can make me miss out on opportunities everyone else is doing because my personal standard won't allow me. People often try to peer pressure me or steer me away from things I believe in, but it usually doesn't work. I also get told I act like someone's parent or grandma by those older than me or my age. I believe this is because of my integrity and routine of following rules. Summary: Today in class, we read the poem "Im Nobody! Who are you?" written by, Emily Dickinson. We also discussed the meanings of being "somebody" and "nobody". Reflection:  I really enjoyed this poem because I related to it. I often try to find people that have the same interests as me, while not giving away that I like them until I find out that they do as well. I do th...

Prompt: Write about an adventure you would like to go on.

Prompt Response:   A country I really want to visit is, China. The geography of China is extremely diverse as it has mountains, rivers, hills, beaches, and essentially anything you could imagine. One place there that I would like to visit is called, Gulong Gorge in Guangzhou, China. This place has many attractions for people to try. There's a cliffside coaster, mountain water rafting, a walkable sky bridge, along with a few other sights. I'm what you could call an "adrenaline junkie", so I love thrill rides. I think I'd probably try  every attraction there. This is an adventure I'd really like to go on. Summary: Today in class, we presented our visual representations of our origin myths. Reflection:  I enjoyed hearing the stories that my classmates have created. I found it interesting how people can come up with drastically different ideas but have the same theme.

Prompt: What is the most creative thing you have ever made? Share what it was and explain why it stands out as your best work.

Prompt Response:     The most creative thing I've ever made was most likely the house I created in the Roblox game, "Bloxburg". This was my favorite game when I was younger, so I would play it pretty often. This house I created was something I worked on everyday for months. Although I was young, I still think this stands out as my best work because I've never worked on anything for that long. I paid attention to every little detail and used every function of the game to perfect my vision. The exterior took the longest, as I wanted to make it look realistic even though it was a Roblox game. This game was an outlet to destress and let my creativity flow without any effort. Summary: Today in class, we continued to work on the visual representation of our origin myths. Reflection:  Making my visual representation allowed me to be creative and have a little fun. I enjoyed this assignment as it let me understand my origin myth more.

Prompt: Everyone has burning questions about life. Mysteries we wonder about but don’t always have clear answers for. Think about your biggest questions about existence, purpose, or the world around you. Write a blog post where you share at least two of your most burning questions about life and explain why these questions matter to you.

Prompt Response:   My first burning question is one that most people have; why and how do I exist? My second question is what happens after we die? These questions are something that I often think about. I try to steer away from having these questions because they often make me start to feel a little crazy. I believe that some questions shouldn't be answered and we should just live in the moment. Society has already answered many questions that I thought could never be answered through thing like science. So, if some questions cant be answered, I think that's okay. Questions like these make me appreciate life a little more, since nobody knows the answer.  Summary: Today in class we talked about the instructions and started working on our visual representation for our origin myths. Reflection:  I really enjoy designing things, so it was interesting to learn how to use Adobe Express

Prompt: Analyze how you’ve adapted to the demands of this course over the past week, and evaluate one strength and one challenge you anticipate as we progress, justifying your insights with personal examples.

Prompt Response:   I believe I've adapted to the demands of this course over the past week fairly well. I've turned everything in on time and provided my best work. One strength I anticipate as we progress is that I will manage my time well. Throughout my entire academic career I have never turned anything in late, unless a problem I could not avoid arose. This strength will allow me to keep my grades up and not be overwhelmed. One challenge I may have as we progress is not doing things with intention. In previous years, I have just done my assignments and forgot about them as soon as I turned them in. But, this year I want to gain insight and knowledge from the completion of these assignments and try to use them for future references. Summary:  Today in class, we finished our origin myths with the intention of shaping them to perfection. Reflection:  I felt really proud of myself because I'm not the best at creative writing. This assignment allowed me to become be...

Prompt: How did creating your own origin myth help you better understand why cultures use stories to explain the origins of people, places, traditions, or natural events? In your response, describe the choices you made while developing your myth and explain the lesson, value, or human responsibility you wanted your story to communicate.

Prompt Response: Creating my own origin myth helped me better understand why cultures use stories to explain the origins of people, places, traditional, or natural events, as it allowed me to gain insight into how stories can really resonate with the reader. When stories like these are orally passed around, the story could be misconstrued. But because they are told with a purpose, the lesson and the theme stay the same. For my story, I really wanted to convey the message about all living things being equal. That is why I made the creator of the world a bird and the antagonist a human. I did this with the intention of showing how, even though the bird is significantly smaller than the human, they are just as strong and need to be respected.  Summary: Today in class, we talked about the parts of a narrative and started to write our own origin myth.  Reflection: I really enjoyed creating my own story because it helped me realize how stories can really teach people great lif...

Prompt: Write about a meaningful object or place in your life that carries a story.

Prompt Response:     I have a ring that I wear every day and I never take this ring off no matter what I'm doing. It was previously my mother's, but  she gave it to me a few years ago. The ring is made up of rubies and diamonds, which is pretty cool because it's both of our birthstones combined. This ring doesn't have a specific story, but it's special to me because it makes me feel connected to my mom at all times. My grandmother also wears a lot of jewelry, and I'm pretty close with her as well. In a way, this ring reminds me of my family and those who support me. Summary : Today in class, we read a Navajo story about the creation of Earth. Reflection: I found it very interesting how there were many similarities to Greek Mythology and Christianity in the story. I also really liked the moral of the story, which essentially states that humans must maintain the right relationship with the world around them.

Write about a time you felt connected to nature, like the kinship in Native American myths.

Prompt Response:         In elementary school I didn't have many friends. At recess everyone would go and play with their friends, but sometimes I didn't want to play any active games, and wanted to sit around and talk. Since everyone was playing games there wasn't anyone left to talk to. However, there was a tree at the edge of the playground where no one was around. I thought that'd be a good place to talk about my day so I went up to the tree and started talking to it as a person. From that day on, I visited the tree every school day even if I had friends to play with after. I rememeber the tree's leaves would seem to perk up or it would be extra windy for some reason. The movement of the tree could've been just my imagination but I truly believe that tree was my friend. Summary:    Today in class, we talked and took notes on the historical background and culture of Native American literature.  Reflection:   I enjoyed today's le...

What are three goals that you want to achieve this academic year?

I have many goals I want to accomplish this academic year, but my top three are: to maintain all A's, become proficient in Spanish, and participate in more extracurriculars. I plan to achieve these by ensuring to keep myself focused on the things that matter and having faith in myself. My first goal is a goal I have every year. I usually achieve this goal, so I don't want this year to be any different. For my second goal, it has always been my dream to become fluent in another language besides English. That is why I want to work towards that goal more this year. Lastly, my last goal is to join more extracurriculars because I want to become more active and connect with my community. I thought that would be a good way to do both at the same time.
